Lets start off with the obvious reason why I love this film: JGL and Zooey Deschanel. They are indie darlings and if you're a hipster or a kid who loved Angels in the Outfield when it came out in the 90's, you love these two. The chemistry between Tom (Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Deschanel) is undeniable, even if things don't work out between the two. And its not just the two leads that have sparks flying. You truly believe that Tom and Mackenzie are best friends and that Tom's sister, Rachel (played Kick-Ass adolescent Chole Moretz herself) is wise beyond her years. I don't think anyone could've read the awe-inducing lines given to Matthew Gray-Gubler as well as he did. Perfect. Perfect. Casting.
The decor of (500) is also amazing. I don't have to talk a lot about this, because everyone is in envy over Summer's blue printed apartment and Tom's chalkboard painted wall. The IKEA scene is enough to send any interior design buff into shock, and the architecture showcased in the film is beautiful to even the most amateur of eyes.
The soundtrack is beautiful. Its as if Regina Spektor wrote her songs specifically for this movie. Us, and Hero are perfect for the opening sequence, and the climax of the film. The plethora of good bands from Simon and Garfunkel to The Temper Trap are perfectly placed in the film, which should come to no surprise as Marc Webb initially filmed music videos for a living.
My favorite scene: Expectations vs. Reality.
I mean isn't that everyone's favorite scene? It, apparently after listening to the commentary, was a really technical scene because the timing was everything, and Marc Webb did a great job making it happen. It was perfect because it makes the audience feel exactly what Tom is feeling.
I recommend this film to anyone who loves a good coming-of-age story, comedy, or even romantic comedy. But just remember: "This is NOT a love story. This is a story about love."
